This article examines infrared (IR) drying as a targeted solution to the drying bottleneck that restricts line speed and causes common print defects in inkjet printing, such as smearing, blocking and set-off. It analyzes IR drying’s core mechanisms, advantages over standalone hot air systems, critical lamp selection factors, optimal configuration, and installation best practices. It demonstrates that properly tuned IR systems, often combined with hot air, effectively boost throughput, enhance print stability, and mitigate drying-related defects across diverse substrates and ink systems.
