Roots, leaves, flowers and other medicinal botanicals differ in moisture, structure, volatile content and heat sensitivity. Infrared may support controlled drying, but no universal wavelength, temperature or moisture target protects every active compound. The process must be developed with product-specific quality methods.

Define Material and Quality Attributes

Record species, plant part, harvest condition, initial moisture, slice size and loading depth. Define the required moisture or water activity, colour, aroma, marker-compound retention and microbiological criteria with qualified quality personnel.

Standardise Preparation and Loading

Cleaning, cutting and surface water affect drying. Roots may require slicing; delicate leaves and flowers may need thin, low-density loading. Keep tray mass and layer thickness consistent so the trial measures the heater rather than loading variation.

Develop a Staged Drying Profile

Stage Objective Risk to watch
Initial ramp Begin evaporation without scorching Surface temperature and aroma loss
Main drying Remove moisture with controlled airflow Uneven trays and case hardening
Final drying Reach validated endpoint Overdrying and colour change
Cooling Stabilise before packing Condensation and moisture regain

Combine Heat With Controlled Airflow

Infrared supplies energy, but moist air must leave the product and enclosure. Map tray positions and prevent exhaust short-circuiting. Reduce power as the product dries if its temperature rises toward the quality limit.

Validate Product Quality

Measure final moisture distribution and the quality attributes that matter for the material's intended use. Infrared does not by itself prove sterilisation, GMP compliance or preservation of active ingredients.

Evaluate YFR medium-wave lamps and carbon emitters through controlled trials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is medium-wave always best for medicinal herbs?

No. Material, thickness, volatile compounds, loading and process limits must be tested.

Can infrared guarantee active-compound retention?

No. Retention requires an appropriate analytical method and validated process window.

Why do tray edges dry first?

Radiation overlap, airflow, loading and enclosure losses can create an edge-to-centre difference.

What endpoint should be used?

Use the moisture, water-activity and quality criteria approved for the specific material and use.
